ABOUT THE SERIES

The River Herring Migration series is a 5 part, 6 hour independent production by Illuminating Minds Media, focused on the natural history, latest science and conservation issues surrounding the River Herring. Three years in the making and spanning across tens of river systems across Massachusetts and Maine, the series weight of content draws on extensive filming in the field,  the expertise of over 30 scientists, naturalists, activists and herring experts  as well as the latest in the scientific literature for producing a timely investigation into the state of River Herring across the Eastern Atlantic.

STORYLINE

A scientific journey of endurance and intrigue as evolutionary adaptations guide the River Herring over vast expanses of water to spawning grounds and back out to sea. Packed with drama, latest scientific discoveries and novel animal behavior including first time recorded behavior during migration at night, the complete natural history of River Herring including its life cycle, diet, key behaviors, navigational abilities, senses and ecological significance are presented in intimate detail.

The audience will empathize with the multitude of obstacles herring face along the way and experience the full force of storms and weather events in their path.  The viewers will come face to face with a host of predators as herring enact their annual migration, spawning behaviors and release of millions of eggs. The cameras follow hatching larvae as they go through juvenile stages of development. Further sequences include a glimpse into their lives at sea and rarely witnessed behavior at night.
